Nothing...
new to report. Eric has been on a business trip to San Diego, CA over the past week, so it has just been us girls around here. We've not really gotten into anything interesting --- a few errands to the usual places like Target and the grocery for Mama items like yogurt, salad, and cheese. I love my hubby, but it sure has been nice to not have to think about dinner every night. A bowl of Honey Bunches of Oats cereal serves me just fine! :)

We made a visit to my old school, and gee, that makes me glad that the Big Man Upstairs had a larger plan for us as far as getting pregnant, the timing of that pregnancy, and Eric & I deciding to have me stay home. Lots of D-R-A-M-A that I'm just not interested in dealing with on a day to day basis. Just another reminder that the Lord always knows best!

I took a few snapshots over the last few days so that we could brighten Daddy's day with a morning wake up email from the East coast.

Look how well I sit up on my own Daddy. Notice my bunny slippers...

Who needs toys when you have bunny slippers to play with?

"Look, Mom! I rolled over to my belly, and actually I was not mad about it!"

Madeline -- Six Months
(Update and Well check)
Sitting up by myself

Six months already?! Our baby girl is a half of a year old! Where does the time go? Madeline still continues to be a happy-go-lucky baby. She is definitely starting to show her personality these days...happy, bubbly, stubborn, independent, sweet. Madeline is not a snuggler even when she is tired. On the rare occasion, she'll put her head down on my shoulder for a snuggle, much to her daddy's chagrin. He's so tall that she uses him as more of a perch to see what's going on around her. She much prefers to play or receive attention in her own space rather than on your lap, and as far as snuggling in for a nap, forget it. She shows affection by grabbing your neck, pulling her face toward yours, and giving a "kiss." It's so sweet. I have an outdoors girl on my hands...this child LOVES to be outside in the fresh air. Taking her out on the back deck or on a walk to the mailbox is an instant cure for fussiness or "cabin fever". She will really enjoy springtime when we can take walks and sit on the back deck regularly.Madeline continues to be a great eater! She loves her cereal and bottle at breakfast, lunch, and dinner with some snack bottles in between on most days. She's consistently eating vegetables at dinner and has had green bean, peas, sweet potato, and carrot. Madeline definitely doesn't seem to be picky. In fact, she might be considered a chow hound by most standards. The first night she eats something new, she makes a "what have you just put in my mouth? face", but by the third night of the new veggie, she seems to savor each bite. There is a continuing love of her playmat, swing, and exersaucer. She has a renewed interest in her kick 'n' play now that she enjoys being more upright and grabbing at things within her reach. Since she's such an independent gal, I rotate her through these stations throughout the day with a little Mama playtime or story in between. Madeline really likes being read to and looking at her books. EVERYTHING she touches goes to her mouth first. She doesn't have any teeth yet to gnaw on everything that goes into her mouth, but she drools like a drippy faucet, so I'm thinking teeth may be on the horizon. Madeline has such an infectious laugh, and her daddy can really get her going. He finds all her tickle spots, and she just laughs and laughs. It's so funny, and she must have quite the imagination as out of the blue she'll just start giggling for no apparent reason. The ladies at the gym think it's so hilarious that they'll lay her down on a blanket with a few things around her, and the next thing they hear is her laughing, talking, and giggling with no prompting. Needless to say, the ladies at the gym adore Madeline and treat her as quite the princess. Madeline rolled over on her own in January, and she must have decided that she's not a fan because she has not done it again. She gets up on her side all the time, and it seems as though she knows not the throw that arm over. Madeline is not sitting up on her own yet, but she's very stable to sit up for short periods of time with plenty of cushion around her. While she's in this position (and it seems to be her new favorite), she is constantly wanting toys not within her reach. She is either reaching out to get them herself or getting upset because they are not within her reach. Her little stubborn self will usually reach as far as her little body can go to get the object of her desire until she's bent over in half practically on her belly. Well, then a new irritation occurs for her -- being on her belly and unable to go anywhere. She has not mastered the art of using her arms to push, so the angry fussing begins until I rescue her. I try to "make" her solve her situation by not rescuing her immediately, and slowly but surely, she's figuring it all out. She'll get there in her own time.As for her napping situation, it's definitely been a chore to get her to nap during the day. I can count on a "power nap" in the morning between 9-10 AM. However, the afternoon nap has been a little tricky. I spent the first month of the new year rearranging schedules and trying out different things to get her to take a nap anytime between the 2-5 PM time period. It really was only successful about 2 or 3 times out of the 7 days of the week...UGH. My mom finally said to me that some babies are not going to fit into my idea of what the day should look like, so in a sense, I gave up for now on the routine afternoon nap schedule that I had in mind. Basically, she ends up falling asleep on the way home from the gym around noon and sleeps until about 1:30 or 2:00 PM, so she ends up eating lunch at 2 PM. It's been that way since the very end of January, so I've let it go and let it be that. The important thing is that she is taking a decent nap in the afternoon, eating/drinking the appropriate amounts, sleeping from 7 PM until 6:30-7:00 AM, and Mommy still gets in her 2 hour workouts, errands, cleaning/laundry/house chores, and Madeline time during the day.Madeline's six month well check went well. Dr. Kapp gave her a clean bill of health and said she looked developmentally on track. She received her 6 month vaccines which of course she was NOT a fan. She was already fussy and tired, so that just made matters worse.
Her stats:
Weight -- 17 lbs. 8 oz. (75 %)
Height -- 26 1/4 in. (78%)
Head -- 44 1/4 cm (90%)

I just can't believe this little joy is mine to love and mold into an adult. What did we do before Madeline? Each and everyday I feel so blessed to have this little girl in my life. She's just a precious, sweet baby, and while she has her moments as all babies do, she generally is such a happy, pleasant baby all day long. Her daddy and I love her with all our hearts.

Nancy & Ellie

Just thinking about my friend, Nancy, today. She's probably in the hospital as we speak being induced to deliver her 3rd child, Ellie. Nancy has two precious little boys, so a little girl is just what the Egleston family needs. I'm so excited for baby Ellie as she will be the baby girl of two older brothers. I'm the baby girl of two older brothers, and I just think that is THE BEST! It wasn't always fun growing up having two older brothers bossing me around and dragging me to every sporting event under the sun, but as I got older, I realized just how lucky I was and am to have these fellas in my life!

Nancy, Good thoughts for an easy and painless delivery! I'm looking forward to seeing the pictures and posts on your blog soon!

Green Beans!

That's right, Madeline had a tasty dinner of rice cereal, green beans, and a few ounces of milk for dinner last night. She's been eating rice cereal for almost 2 months now, and she's about a week shy from being six months old, so I figured I would test the waters with a veggie. And, yes, I'm the mean mommy who started with the GREEN veggies instead of carrots or sweet potatoes or squash. In the end it may not make much of a difference whether I started with green veggies or the sweeter veggies, but I want my girl to love the greens as much as I do!

I was feeding her the cereal as normal, and she was grubbing down as normal. I put about a tablespoon and a half of the green bean in the bowl too. I slipped a little green bean taste on the spoon with a normal bite of cereal. She made the following face -- she knew something was different, but I'm not sure she disliked it. So I continued to slip a little bite of green bean on the spoon with the cereal for a few more bites, and she made funny faces, but she continued to eat as normal.

Then, I went for the gusto -- a full spoon of green bean! And, she definitely knew something was different as she made this face:
So, all in all, the green bean fiesta went well. She didn't gag, spit it out, or refuse to eat it. Keep in mind, I maybe gave her a total of one and a half tablespoons of the veggie, so it wasn't that much. I also didn't want to upset her belly. I know the greens can be a little harder on the belly, so I didn't expect her to eat a bunch. Like I said, I just wanted to test the waters with veggies -- Madeline is such a good eater and doesn't seem to be picky (she'll take her rice cereal however she can get it--runny, thick, warm, cold), so I was dying to know how she'd react to veggies. For now, we'll stick with the green beans a tiny portion at a time so she can get used to her new mealtime addition.

I so very much enjoy going through all these milestones with Madeline. How lucky am I that I get to introduce what the world has to offer to this sweet little girl?!

All I've Ever Wanted...

is a little girl, and this is one of the reasons why:

Madeline is just looking sassy today in her faux fur vest, pink tee, and khaki bell bottoms today. We went to the mall the other day just to get out of the house and browse, and Dillard's was having an amazing SALE on baby clothes. I just had to make this sassy purchase for just $7.49!

Little girls are just too much fun to dress! I foresee many sassy bargain outfits in Madeline's future! (And, for all you practical people out there, this is not the most practical outfit as spit up and drool tend to make the fur a little crusty, but that's okay because it is SO CUTE!)

Fun with Friends

We had a playdate with our friends this past Friday. We've had several playdates with my friend, Jenny, and her twins, Delaney and Rutledge, but this time we invited two more friends, Jack (middle in blue seat) and Alexa (sitting on the floor). I went to high school with all of these mamas, and we've been doing a monthly girls only supper club for the last two years. Just recently, our supper club was bursting with babies, so it's been fun to get together during the day to have playdates.

Guess who rolled over from back to front?

Yesterday, Madeline spent lots of time on her activity mat in the buff because she has a really bad diaper rash, so we were letting her fanny "air out". That diaper must've weighed her down because she was happily playing with all the dangling things, and before we knew it we looked down at her and she was like this:

It's as though she was super proud of herself because she looked up at us and smiled! It was so cute. She rolled over a couple more times and struck her super girl pose (see below). She wasn't quite sure how she got on her belly, and once she was there, she just hung out. During tummy time, she gets angry about being on her belly, but when she put herself in that position, she just played.

Bunny Feet

This is what I saw when I went to go get Madeline from her nap yesterday afternoon. I heard her in the monitor talking and playing. When I walked into her room, I just watched for a little while before I peered over the edge. I witnessed the following silliness, and yes, she was wearing her bunny slippers yesterday.

Madeline is 5 Months Old!

Wow, over the last month, Madeline has really changed. She's "talking" a lot more, can hold her head/neck really steady, eats a huge bowl of rice cereal for lunch and dinner, doesn't hate tummy time quite as much, has a new found love of grabbing her feet, and has started taking big girl naps. She's doing really well with her new routine. It's only been 2 weeks since I started the new "lunch, play, naptime in the crib" routine, and she's starting to realize that's her normal day. She LOVES her playmat and swing. I would have to say those are her favorite "stations", but the exersaucer is becoming a new favorite. She's not quite there physically or cognitively to do all the things the exersaucer has to offer, but that's okay. She still enjoys being in it for a short period of time. Madeline has really started to explore the world around her -- she grabs any and everything that she can get those little chubby hands on, and whatever she grabs goes straight to her mouth first. Generally, she is just one HAPPY baby -- as you can see from the pictures.

Madeline can sit really well when she's propped up, and she's not quite rolling over yet. She wants to roll, but she's just not there yet. Okay by me, I don't have to worry about her when I slip out of the room for a quick second. (I don't leave her alone very long nor do I leave her on elevated surfaces anymore just in case she decides to roll over.) She really enjoys having books read to her. I realize that she doesn't understand the book, but she loves to hear the inflection in your voice, and she studies the pictures intently. Her Nana Stewart and Grandpa McCarthy are both avid readers, so she must take after them. (That's a good thing!! Her daddy doesn't like to read at all.) Her little personality is coming out more and more...she's a very happy-go-lucky baby. Her crankiness really only comes out when she's hungry or tired. She really loves her daddy, and who wouldn't? He is FUN-DADDY -- he makes her laugh out loud the most with all his silly songs, faces, and dances.
The ladies at the gym still adore Madeline, and I would have to say the feeling is very mutual. When I pass her off to Ms. Kelly or Ms. Mac, she kicks her legs wildly. Madeline is starting to outgrow a lot of her clothes. She can wear some 3-6 month clothes, and mostly she wears 6 month clothes. She looks really cute in her dresses, jeans, and sweaters now that she's not so slouchy and newborn-like. I'm doing my best to make her a girly girl. I've got a pack of bows ready and waiting for her hair to get just a little bit longer. Of course, I've already tried them out on her, and she does look cute with a little bow in her hair. I look forward to waking up each morning to take care of Madeline as she seems to do a new "trick" everyday, and I feel so LUCKY to be able to witness it all!

Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!

In all the years that I've lived in South Carolina, I've only seen it snow here a few times, and last night it snowed! Unfortunately, we missed the snow actually coming down, but this is what we woke up to this morning!
However, by mid-afternoon, much of the snow had started to melt and even dry up. It was fun while it lasted!
School, of course, was canceled, but Daddy still had to go to work, and Madeline and I still went to the gym.

Fun with Friends

We had a playdate with my friend Jenny and her twins, Delaney and Rutledge, on Friday. Again, it was more for the mommies, but this playdate was much louder. All 3 babies were babbling and testing out their voices. It was almost like they were competing with each other. Madeline is just a tiny bit more coordinated than the twins, so she was reaching out to grab on them while they just checked her out. It was really interesting to us to sit and watch them stare each other down. It was really cute as they smiled at one another. Before we know it, they will be running around playing with each other getting into all kinds of mischief!

Our pictures were taken towards the end of the playdate when it was time for all 3 babies to take a nap, so needless to say, they were not in the mood to pose nor smile for us. But, nevertheless, we got our picture!

Just thinking...

***I heard through the grapevine that my high school calculus teacher, Mr. Oberly, passed away last night. I'm so sad. He was truly a teaching genius -- he could make CALCULUS fun!!! He gave every student a nickname & picked on some of us more than others, and all the while, we learned how to take integrals! I'll never forget the first time I made a B on a chapter test (I never "got it" even though he was a phenomenal teacher, but I usually made C's and D's.), and he announced my grade to the class. He and the class gave me a standing ovation! That test hung on our fridge for the rest of the school year!

***I absolutely love my Shark cordless sweeper. It makes for crumbless tile and hardwoods quick!

***Eric and I were talking the other night about how run down we both feel these days. We have been going non-stop since Thanksgiving. We've traveled, had overnight guests, finagled schedules, arranged sitters, and seemed to be on the go 24/7. We are looking forward to the next couple of months of JUST US -- a family of three. We don't need a break from each other or Madeline, but we need a break from the constant go-go-go. We have no special plans except to do what we want, when we want, and how we want. The three of us need it, and we owe it to ourselves to just enjoy each other without a "to-do" list looming over our heads.

***I'm excited for my mom who leaves for yet another one of her trips. She has a wonderful group of lady friends with whom she travels. They've been all over -- New Zealand, Thailand, Greece, just to name a few. She leaves for Peru/Ecuador/Galapagos Islands on Saturday for this 3 week excursion. I do worry about her traveling the way she does with all the disgruntled people out there in the world, but I know she'll have fun and have many adventures to share with us.

***I need a gym routine change. I love going to the gym. It's an integral part of my day, but I need something new to jazz up the workouts. Perhaps running instead of the elliptical or a few new weight work-outs...I need to keep thinking on that one.

***I went to a new hairdresser last Thursday. I like him, and I think he did a great job on my hair. (He did much better than the first lady I went to in December.) I think I may have found my new hairdresser. No one can replace Arlene, but he's pretty good.

***I'm getting together with my two longtime friends, Steph and Dana, next Tuesday evening. We've been friends since elementary school. When we get together it's like we've never left each other.

A sign of a DELICIOUS meal?

When I look down for a second to grab her bottle, Madeline managed to dig her hands in the cereal bowl and proceeded to rub it all over her face. It was so funny. I just laughed out loud, and my laughing must've tickled her because she let out a giggle too. Luckily bathtime is right after dinner...

Big Girl Nap Part 2

Well, today was the first day of the second week of taking naps in the crib in the afternoon. I'm not sure what happened today -- minor adjustments from last week's experiences, exhaustion from the baptism weekend, new routine settling into her little body, or divine intervention -- but whatever it is, Madeline went down for a nap in her crib at 1:45 and is still sleeping soundly! It's 4:10. I've been able to accomplish so much and feel good that no massive crying it out fits took place in order for this little miracle to happen.

Our first week of the new routine was not really that smooth, but I am a persistent woman, so I was determined not to abandon my plan. I know, or should say that I am learning, that no plan goes off without a hitch especially when you are dealing with babies, and I know that I have to embed this new routine into Madeline's day so that it becomes the "new normal" for her. I am also repeating the phrase "slow and steady wins the race" in my head.

Last week, a couple of days were okay -- she slept 45 minutes to an hour of the allotted naptime in her crib and spent the rest of the time fighting the sleep and playing/talking. Thursday was especially AWFUL, and it was a test of wills. I, of course, was victorious, but I applaud Madeline's efforts. However, Madeline was somewhat victorious that day because she didn't take a sleeping nap, but she was in her crib for the 2 hour time period. (I must note here that she did NOT scream for 2 hours -- mostly she played, talked, and wiggled herself awake if she drifted off to sleep. There was one 20 minute episode of crying it out where I think she must've decided to abandon that plan since it clearly did not get her the attention she desired.) I must mention two things about this particularly awful day: 1. This Mommy did have to go stand in the front yard for about 15 minutes to escape the very angry baby noises coming from the crib. 2. Madeline went to bed at 6:30 PM that evening.

Despite the rocky start to this new routine/plan, I hunkered down and put the plan into action today. So for today, I am lucky to have the time to get some things checked off the "to do list", and I feel optimistic that my goals are not unattainable. Tomorrow is a new day, and it could be a repeat of last Thursday, but she has shown me that she can take a big girl nap!

Baptism
Madeline was baptized today at Seven Oaks Presbyterian Church. What a great turnout we had -- both sets of grandparents, my two brothers with their wives and children, Eric's sister, and of course, my best friend, Stephanie and her mom.
When Eric and I moved to Columbia, we looked for a church family for quite some time. We are not "Mr. and Mrs. Church" nor will we ever be, but we wanted a place to belong and feel comfortable every Sunday both for ourselves and the family we wanted to start. We wanted to find a church home of our own, one for our family. We searched and searched, and we just went to Seven Oaks on the chance that it would be okay. We tried it out one Sunday, and we really liked it. But, we kept "shopping" around, but we kept finding ourselves being drawn back to Seven Oaks. While most of the congregation is older, the minister is quite young. His sermons seemed to reach out to both Eric and I. He's real, down to earth, and friendly. We were welcomed EVERY Sunday we attended by EVERYONE. We received phone calls and cards from various members letting us know that they noticed we were at the service the previous Sunday, and they'd hope to see us again. So, we bit the bullet and joined officially in December, 2007, the same month I found out I was pregnant with Madeline.
So, today, we had Madeline baptized in the church we found together before we knew Madeline was a part of us. The service was extra special this morning, and it was sweet, simple, and very sentimental to me. It was surreal to be standing in front of my family, Eric's family, and the church family holding my daughter while the minister spoke of the importance of baptism. Our entire family attended the service, and I was touched that both my brothers and their families made the effort to attend. Eric's family also made the drive from North Carolina to attend. Madeline was a perfect doll during the service before it was her turn to be in the spotlight, and she was even more perfect during the baptism -- no stranger anxiety, no fear of the dripping holy water on her head, and no fear of being taken up and down the aisle in the church while Reverend Fant made a lovely statement about her baptism to the congregation.
After the service, we had our families at our house for a luncheon -- a "make your own panini" bar was set. (We received a fab new kitchen gadget for Christmas that makes paninis!) It seemed to be a hit even though I had "hostess anxiety" all morning leading up to the lunch. The new recipes I tried out were yummy, and I think everyone enjoyed themselves.
A good time was had by all. Madeline is so blessed to have so much immediate and church family surrounding her that loves and adores her as much as Eric and I do.
