Madeline Grace

I adore this child.  Just look at her!
My first born - a rule follower, a girly girl through and through, a book lover, a kindhearted friend, a respectful student, a chatterbox, a Daddy's girl, a dancer and singer, an all around sweet-natured, sensitive child
Since Madeline has started her four year old preK class, I feel like she has grown by leaps and bounds not only academically but socially.  Madeline is soaking everything up during her school day, and she is obviously responding quite well to her teachers' teaching style.  She never ceases to amaze me with her random facts that come out of her mouth.  And, the questions!  Although they are non-stop, are really thoughtful and at times, complicated to answer.  Madeline has branched out this year socially.  Last year, she and her best little buddy, Aubrey, were attached at the hip almost to the point of being exclusive of others.  This year, she has branched out socially playing with others on the playground and picking centers based on her interest not because Aubrey chose that particular center.  Four K is clearly working for her, and I love that school is such a happy place for her.  I hope her zest for school remains with her always.

Madeline's "little Mama"personality is a blessing and a curse.  She adores her little sister, watches out for her, tattles on her, and enjoys playing with her.  Unfortunately, Madeline can hover too much and really get under Amelia's skin.  It's annoying for me to witness her hovering tendencies, so I can only imagine how irritated Amelia must feel at times.  They have really started to play so well together, and while Madeline is the one creating the imaginary scene, Amelia has started to catch onto Madeline's antics.  Much to Madeline's liking, Amelia usually goes along with whatever Madeline wants her to do.  The giggles and squeals that erupt from them during happy sibling play is absolutely precious.  It stops me in my tracks, and I just enjoy the moment.
Madeline's ferocious four behaviors have calmed down tremendously, and I'm so thankful she responded well to our stern "nip it in the bud" discipline.  She's back to her "every once in a while testing to see if the rules have changed" self.  Everyone is a much happier camper when privileges and toys have not been removed from daily life.  :)

I am so thankful, even in the tough moments, that I was chosen to be Madeline's Mommy.  She's truly a little gem, and I am enjoying this journey as she leaves toddlerhood and enters "BIG kid world" (as she likes to say).
Madeline, we love you to pieces, and we are so proud of the little girl you are becoming.

Last Year of Preschool

Madeline started her last year of preschool today.  To say that she's excited is a complete understatement.  She's been asking for weeks when she gets to go back to school.  She loves school.
In the carpool, Madeline hopped out of the car, waved good-bye, and off she went with her new teacher.  It makes my heart happy to know that she's in a place where she can be herself, feel loved, and learn so much.  Her teachers this year are fabulous, and I have no doubts that she'll be prepared for kindergarten.  After the first day, she reported, "Mrs. Boyd [her lead teacher] told me that I was an excellent listener, and Ms. Becky [the director] agreed!"  So, apparently, we are off to a great start.
Madeline,
We are so excited to see all the new things you will learn this year.  We hope you will mind your manners, share with your friends, listen to your teachers, and treat everyone with respect.  Happy first day of your last year in preschool!
We love you!

Birthday Manicure & Pedicure

To celebrate Madeline's birthday, we invited her best friend, Aubrey, from preschool to be with us for the day.  We picked her up at her church after they let out and headed to lunch at the very kid friendly Wild Wing.  These two girls are so silly together!  They had so much fun at lunch.

After lunch, I dropped Eric and Amelia off at the house and took the girls to a little place that does little girls manicures and pedicures.  Madeline and Aubrey were a little unsure of the whole process at first, but they quickly settled into the pampering experience.  It was very cute.  The girls were given a robe, a choice of scents for their pedicure water, and colors to choose from for their nails and toenails.

Each girl received royal treatment at the pedicure bowl - legs being scrubbed, a hot towel, lotion massages, and toenail painting.

Madeline was the perfect client letting her nails dry.

We ended the afternoon at the ice cream shop for giant ice cream cones.

Madeline and Aubrey enjoyed celebrating together.  It was a fun-filled, girly day!

Family Birthday Celebration

Madeline had a wonderful birthday.  She was very excited that her fourth birthday finally arrived.  We had a normal day planned, and when Daddy got home from work, we planned to have a family celebration.

Madeline woke up to a small present waiting for her at her spot at the breakfast table.
Big Smile from the Birthday Girl!
We went about our normal summer day, and Madeline had a wonderful time celebrating her birthday with her friends at the gym kids' care.  She has become friends with some of the other "regulars", so she enjoyed bringing chocolate chip cookies to share with her friends.

After everyone took naps, we were ready to celebrate Madeline!  She requested her dinner -- turkey and cheese sandwich with carrots and dip on the side.  Not at all what I was expecting, but okay by me.  The birthday girl is pretty simple.

Happily waiting on her turkey & cheese sandwich.

Amelia was all smiles and enjoyed celebrating.
Madeline's birthday dinner:  Turkey, cheese, and PICKLES on a sandwich with carrots and dip on the side.

Next, we continued our little tradition of decorating the birthday cake.  Needless to say, the girls did more licking than spreading the chocolate icing.

Yep, Madeline probably double dipped her spatula numerous times by this point.  Luckily, it was just the four of us partaking in the birthday cake!

Yummy!  Icing.  I love Amelia's face at this point.  Her spatula was in the tub of icing, and I stopped to snap a picture of Madeline not paying attention that Amelia was losing her mind over her missing spatula!
Sprinkles time!!!  Madeline's cake definitely requires sprinkles!  The more the better!

Cake is finally complete!  She was so proud of her cake!
Decisions, decisions when it came time to pick out the candles.  She can't wait to be older, so she can use more than four candles!
