Birthday Manicure & Pedicure

To celebrate Madeline's birthday, we invited her best friend, Aubrey, from preschool to be with us for the day.  We picked her up at her church after they let out and headed to lunch at the very kid friendly Wild Wing.  These two girls are so silly together!  They had so much fun at lunch.

After lunch, I dropped Eric and Amelia off at the house and took the girls to a little place that does little girls manicures and pedicures.  Madeline and Aubrey were a little unsure of the whole process at first, but they quickly settled into the pampering experience.  It was very cute.  The girls were given a robe, a choice of scents for their pedicure water, and colors to choose from for their nails and toenails.

Each girl received royal treatment at the pedicure bowl - legs being scrubbed, a hot towel, lotion massages, and toenail painting.

Madeline was the perfect client letting her nails dry.

We ended the afternoon at the ice cream shop for giant ice cream cones.

Madeline and Aubrey enjoyed celebrating together.  It was a fun-filled, girly day!

Family Birthday Celebration

Madeline had a wonderful birthday.  She was very excited that her fourth birthday finally arrived.  We had a normal day planned, and when Daddy got home from work, we planned to have a family celebration.

Madeline woke up to a small present waiting for her at her spot at the breakfast table.
Big Smile from the Birthday Girl!
We went about our normal summer day, and Madeline had a wonderful time celebrating her birthday with her friends at the gym kids' care.  She has become friends with some of the other "regulars", so she enjoyed bringing chocolate chip cookies to share with her friends.

After everyone took naps, we were ready to celebrate Madeline!  She requested her dinner -- turkey and cheese sandwich with carrots and dip on the side.  Not at all what I was expecting, but okay by me.  The birthday girl is pretty simple.

Happily waiting on her turkey & cheese sandwich.

Amelia was all smiles and enjoyed celebrating.
Madeline's birthday dinner:  Turkey, cheese, and PICKLES on a sandwich with carrots and dip on the side.

Next, we continued our little tradition of decorating the birthday cake.  Needless to say, the girls did more licking than spreading the chocolate icing.

Yep, Madeline probably double dipped her spatula numerous times by this point.  Luckily, it was just the four of us partaking in the birthday cake!

Yummy!  Icing.  I love Amelia's face at this point.  Her spatula was in the tub of icing, and I stopped to snap a picture of Madeline not paying attention that Amelia was losing her mind over her missing spatula!
Sprinkles time!!!  Madeline's cake definitely requires sprinkles!  The more the better!

Cake is finally complete!  She was so proud of her cake!
Decisions, decisions when it came time to pick out the candles.  She can't wait to be older, so she can use more than four candles!

Singing "Happy Birthday"!

Melissa and Doug cupcakes for her kitchen were a hit.

Little People additions...

Little People Princesses were a huge hit!

All in all a great fourth birthday!

Four Years Old

It's official.  We have a FOUR year old on our hands, and she is such a big girl now.

Sweet Madeline:  our first born, Amelia's little Mama, our thoughtful and caring little girl, our rule follower, our child who learns from her consequences, our little fashionista, our bossy britches, our Drama Mama, our book lover, our Chatty Cathy who talks to just talk when there is too much silence, our imaginative playmate, our independent girl who enters the preschool like she owns it, our princess-jewel-ballet-high heels-loving girly girl, our inquisitive child with a memory like a steel trap, our sweet girl who requests "family hugs" all the time, our beach baby
Madeline's Favorites Right Now:  Arby's, the colors pink and purple, Nutella & peanut butter sandwiches, Fruit Loops or Raisin Graham Crunch (can't bring myself to tell her it's Raisin Bran cause it's just so darn cute) in milk, Barbie dolls, Playing dress up, Ariel, her Little People princesses, watching Super Why or The Little Einsteins, reading Fancy Nancy or Pinkalicious books, reading fairy tales, "helping" with a story at bedtime (She has memorized so many of her books, so she can "read" one to us each night.), swimming at the pool, anything that sparkles, wearing jewels & Mommy's high heels
Madeline received a clean bill of health at the four year old well visit.  She weighs 33 pounds 6 ounces (36 percentile) and is 40.5 inches tall (66 percentile).  Her vision is 20/20, and she passed her hearing test with flying colors.  Eric and I didn't tell her about the shots prior to the visit.  When she asked us, we always, said, "I don't know.  Dr. B. will let us know."  So, after Dr. B. checked Madeline out, Madeline asked the dreaded question.  Sorry to throw you under the bus, Dr. B., but we decided she'd take it better coming from you, the doctor.  We were really proud of Madeline's handling of four shots & one finger prick.  She didn't flinch at the finger prick, whimpered at the first three shots, and the last one had a big fat needle, a lot of fluid, and it burned.  That one got her tears flowing, but as soon as she discovered necklaces and bracelets in the special four year old treasure box, the shots were no longer an issue.  Her five band-aids then became battle scars, and she proudly declared to everyone we met that day about her morning at the doctor's office.
Madeline is our independent, imaginative, creative play little girl.  She's happy as a clam in her room playing by herself, dressing up, donning jewels on all of her limbs, and she thinks she looks "perfectly fabulous" as she likes to say.  She marches to her own tune, and she has confidence.  She will proudly dance, play, talk, tell outrageous stories that never end, and draw & explain pictures with no worries about what others think of her.  For example, at her friend Aubrey's birthday party, she assembled this tutu, Hello Kitty rain boots attire over her party dress, and she then proceeded to walk around with a tray of cookies stopping at each person to offer them one.  She was in her own little world and was proud of it.
Madeline hit the Ferocious Fours with gusto.  We've seen a resurgence of temper tantrums, testing the rules, talking back, bossing her sister around in an aggressive bullying type of manner, and some general defiance.  It was slowly coming on and our usually mild mannered, easy to parent child seemed to turn into a terrible twos type child over the course of a couple of weeks.  Her unacceptable behaviors and Mommy came to an explosive head shortly after her fourth birthday.  During some Mama down time, I pulled out my trusty John Rosemond and devised my plan because my "raising my voice, time outs/being sent to her room, privilege loss" strategies were NOT working.  Madeline's toys, dolls, dress up clothes, jewels, coloring books, purses, TV,  and playroom playtime were all removed from her.  I laid out the three simple rules: 1. Share 2. Do not boss anyone around or talk back. 3. Keep your hands to yourself.  Each day was a new day broken into three slots (morning, lunchtime before naps, and after naps), Madeline got to pick something to earn back for each slot.  I set it out to remind her what she was working to earn back, and she had to display acceptable behavior in order to get her stuff back.  Seven long days later, she had earned ALL of her stuff back, and she was back to the Madeline we were used to having around.  It made an impression on her, and she was so proud of herself for living up to expectations & earning her stuff back.  She realized just how much she enjoys her toys and TV privileges, so she still reminds me what the three rules are.  She also assures me she's going to follow the rules because she doesn't want to lose her stuff again.  Sweet girl.
Madeline cannot wait to get back to seeing her two little best friends everyday at preschool.  She's beyond excited to see them, be in the four year old class, and do "fun stuff", as she calls it, at school.  School is definitely Madeline's happy place.
Madeline, Your Daddy and I are so proud of the little girl you are becoming.  We love your spunk, your mannerly ways, your silly girly girl antics, and your sweet nature.  We love you with all of our hearts, and we look forward to watching you grow and learn as you creep towards five years old.

Twenty Months Old

This little turkey is almost TWO years old!
Amelia, you have simmered down since your last post.  Our consistency in discipline is starting to pay off for us because you are not nearly as temper tantrum prone.  Don't get me wrong, you still test your boundaries being an almost two year old, and you still swat, lay out like you are going to kick and scream, shout "NO!", and get livid but not as frequently.  Unfortunately, throwing toys when you are mad has entered our world, but as with everything, Daddy and I remain consistent in our discipline.  This too shall pass.  Oh sweet girl, you understand so much, but you can communicate so little.  You've gotten better, BUT I'm really the only one who understands everything.  Surgery and speech therapy is in our very near future.  And, that's okay.  I've enrolled you in a three day per week preschool program, and we hope that your communication will be forced to improve until your second birthday when we can get your tongue fixed and therapy arranged.  We are excited for you to be able to spread your wings at preschool and gain some independence from Mommy and Big Sister.  You do so well on your own, but you rarely have time to be YOU!  I'm excited for this school year and to see you blossom in your own element!
You love to color, read books (finally!!!), draw on the Etch-a-Sketch, play with the Little People, build with blocks, and play in the toy kitchen.  You have started to mimic taking care of babies, so you feed your baby, try to give her a paci, and carry her on your hip.  It's way too cute.  You've also started to mimic us by chatting on the phone, pointing your finger as if you are issuing a command, and "telling stories".  You gave up the bottle with no problems, and you replaced your bottle time before naps and bedtimes with stories.  You LOVE stories.  You always ask for "mo" when story time is over.  You literally run to the rocker when it's time for naps and bedtimes because you love being read to, and I love that alone time with you, sweet girl.  You still have your paci, and we aren't dealing with that anytime soon.  You've attached to another lovey, so you now need two loveys and your paci at sleep time.  You still sleep like a rock star - 7 PM until about 7 AM with about 45 minutes to an hour of "me time" in the crib after you wake up.  Your naps are about 1.5 hours to 2 hours long, so I cannot complain!
Amelia, I have no doubt that you will be a "girly girl" with some rough and tumble mixed into the "What Makes Amelia" formula - you are all about accessories, shoes, purses, wearing a bow, playing Barbies, but something tells me that there is more to you than all that girlishness.  You like to rough house, get dirty & sweaty, climb, be outside, run, and squeal.  You love to use your fork, spoon, and napkin at mealtime, but at the same time you will dump an entire cup of water on yourself and think nothing of it.  However, the slightest crumb on your shirt will drive you nuts.
Amelia, you are just like the other three people in this house - You LOVE Good Mood Food - Arby's.  You can spot an Arby's a mile away, and you will shout, "EAT!" everytime you see one!  You will mow down a Junior Roast beef, bun and all, in a hot second, and then ask for more.  You like the curly fries, but you prefer the sandwich.  You ARE your Daddy's child in the food department.  You like a meal, not a snack, and you like a meat being involved in your meal.  Chicken, green beans, carrots, applesauce, yogurt, raisins, fruit snacks, Cheetos, Goldfish, Milk, Icy Cold Water, any type of fresh fruit, and any kind of cereal are your favorite foods.  You love to eat cereal like a "big girl" - cereal in a bowl with milk and a spoon.  Believe it or not, Raisin Bran Crunch is your favorite with Fruit Loops being a close second.  Ranch dressing is a must at dinnertime.  You dip anything into it, and if it's not on your plate, you ask for "Dip, pease!"
Amelia, you add a zest to our lives!  We ADORE & LOVE you to pieces!

Daddy's In Charge

I went away on a girls' weekend, and I found this picture on our camera!  Daddy time is the best!

My sources tell me that upon arrival at church, both girls were dressed adorably AND with bloomers and bows!  As an added bonus, I came home to a clean, tidy kitchen!

Girls weekend plus a well kept household = total bliss for this Mama

Thanks honey!  We had a fabulous time.
